Jamie Sale
The birthday girl for April 21 is Jamie Salé.
I rarely get to meet the celebrites I talk about on this blog, but I’ve met Olympic gold medalist Jamie Salé because she used to go to my gym. We’ve even talked about astrology.
Now Salé really does strike me as a Taurus. She’s earthy and she plays the girl-next-door role well. In fact, the routine that won her a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics saw her dressed in an atypical outift for a female figure skater, resembling a button-up sweater and an inconspicuous skirt. The content of the routine required that the audience and the judges would relate to the character that Salé was portraying, and she accomplised that goal admirably.
Relatability is one of the hallmark qualities of Taurus style. No one expects the girl next door to be dressed in head-to-toe sequins, do they? I suppose that they do fantasize about her posing for “FHM,” though . . .
Miranda Kerr
The birthday girl for April 20 is Miranda Kerr.
I don’t get an Aries vibe from Miranda Kerr, so I looked up her natal chart. Much to my surprise, there’s almost no chance that she’s a Taurus. Even though the sun switched signs on her birthday, she would have had to have been born just a few minutes before midnight to be a Taurus.
She does, however, have Mercury and Mars in Taurus. If I knew what time she was born, I could place those planets in a particular house and probably get a better handle on the “girl-next-door” of modeling. I constantly refer to the “girl-next-door” types that have shaped my views of the signature Taurus style, and Kerr would seamlessly fit into that category.
Perhaps I’ll find out and be able to revisit this subject someday. Call me, Miranda!
Paloma Picasso
The birthday girl for April 19 is Paloma Picasso.
I had never looked up Paloma Picasso’s sign before, but after stumbling upon her birthday a moment ago, I can’t believe how well she fits into the aesthetic of her sign. Not only did she design bold, modern jewelry, but her signature fragrance embodied a woman Picasso herself described as intended for “strong women like herself.”
The icing on the cake, however, was the designer’s association with the color red and her fondness for fire-engine red lipstick. Red is the signature Aries color. I can’t think of anyone else in the fashion business besides Valentino Garavani who has a closer association with the color, and he’s a Taurus. I suppose Christian Louboutin also has made red his signature color, but he’s a Capricorn like me. If I was to use red as an homage to Aries, I’d probably put it on the bottom of a shoe, too. Anyway, it all makes me wish that I had looked up Picasso’s sign years ago. C’est la vie!
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
The birthday girl for April 18 is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
Huntington-Whiteley is one of my favorite models. I’ve seen her interviews and she is hilarious. But before I knew anything about her, I fell for her for the same reason I usually fall for Aries models: because she’s strapping.
I don’t know why I seem to gravitate towards strapping Aries women, but I do. The other three Aries models that pop into my head are Tatjana Patitz, Alek Wek and Ève Salvail, and not one of them is known for being diminutive. I suppose that speaks to the sign itself and what makes an Aries woman attractive. Being comfortable with being six-foot-two in heels and sticking out like a sore thumb because you’re so freakin’ gorgeous takes a lot of confidence. Confidence should be something Aries women have in abundance. And even if these strapping women don’t have self-confidence, all four of them made a career out of faking it. Bravo!
Victoria Beckham
The birthday girl for April 17 is Victoria Beckham.
I have to admit that I misjudged Victoria Beckham. She was my least-favorite Spice Girl because she was the worst singer and the worst dancer in the group. After she married David Beckham and declared that she was going to become a fashion designer, I just rolled my eyes back into my head and said “Not another celebrity who thinks that slapping their name on a label makes them into a designer!”
But I couldn’t have been more wrong about Beckham. In just a few seasons, she’s gone from zero to hero in my eyes. In fact, I don’t know of another Aries designer whose work better reflects the minimalistic style of the sign.
If I rewrote my book tomorrow, I’d put Victoria Beckham front and center in the Aries chapter. The only thing that she could do in order to represent the Aries aesthetic better than she has is to start incorporating pants into her collections. Of all the signs in the zodiac, Aries women do wear the pants . . .
Ellen Barkin
The birthday girl for April 16 is Ellen Barkin.
Ellen Barkin epitomizes signature Aries style. She never wears anything too complicated or too girly, and she’s got a great, modern haircut that adapts constantly to reflect current trends.
I couldn’t ask for anything more from the actress. She’s exactly what I expect a well-dressed Aries woman to be.
Dara Torres
The birthday girl for April 15 is Dara Torres.
There are a lot of female athletes with muscles like Dara Torres, so I don’t want to claim that her zodiac sign is responsible for that. I do want to point out the connection between her competitive nature and her zodiac sign. In 2000, she won five medals at the Olympics when she was the oldest member of the US swim team. Eight years later, she won three more medals when she was, once again, the oldest member of the US swim team.
Aries natives love to win. They also like to feel as if they’re beating Father Time at his own game. No one is able to do that, but Dara Torres has certainly put in a valiant effort. Youthful, energetic and competitive, she’s an Aries through and through.
Adrien Brody
The birthday boy for April 14 is Adrien Brody.
Brody has recently become the face of the Gillette Fusion ProGuide Styler. It’s no surprise to me that an Aries man is pitching a product designed to groom facial hair. However, it does surprise me that there aren’t more Aries actresses lined up to represent similar products. I can imagine Rosie O’Donnell selling mustache wax, can’t you?
Lyle Waggoner
The birthday boy for April 13 is Lyle Waggoner.
Waggoner was best known for his appearances on “The Carol Burnett Show” and his role of Colonel Steve Trevor on “Wonder Woman.”
I get wrapped up in a lot of topics besides fashion when I’m posting on this blog. I suppose that I should stop and discuss the two signs that wear military gear the best. Both Aries and Capricorn tend to suit regimental styles. Playing an air force Colonel, Waggoner regularly appeared in the formal military garb that suits his zodiac sign. Less-formal, more-functional military styles seem to suit Capricorn better. I suppose that Aries natives need to have the stars and bars on their garments so us to get the job done.
Now none of that explains why I posted a photo of Lyle Waggoner without his clothes on . . .
Ed O’Neill
The birthday boy for April 12 is Ed O’Neill.
Aries men are often manly men. They can also be rather grouchy men. As I mentioned in my previous post, they don’t often put the brakes on their mouths when they should. It makes them appear to be cantakerous and rude.
It’s interesting that Ed O’Neill has been able to turn that Aries stereotype into his schtick. On both “Married with Children” and “Modern Family,” the actor has become one of the most iconic grouches on television.
I’ve seen O’Neill being interviewed and he isn’t nearly as bad-natured as the characters he plays. Nevertheless, if he didn’t have an inner-grouch within him, he probably wouldn’t be as successful as he is. He should thank his lucky stars that he’s an Aries.
