Happy New Year!

leave a comment »

Okay, I haven’t been keeping up with this blog.  I want to, but I’d also like to do about a million other things every week, too.

I’m not going to make any promises, but I do hope to be able to find time in the new year to keep this going. I feel like a jerk every time I post something like this, but I really don’t owe anyone free astrological services, so I need to get over that, right?

Anyway, if you like reading what I’m writing, keep checking back.  In another week or so, all this holiday crap will settle down and I’ll hopefully get back into a routine where keeping up with everything doesn’t feel like such a chore.

Georges Seurat

Georges Seurat

The birthday boy for December 2 is Georges Seurat.

Sagittarius natives are concerned with the “big picture.”  For that reason, it’s interesting to note that Seurat was a Sagittarius.  His most iconic painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” is composed of thousands of tiny “points” of paint that together form a “big picture.”

For a Sagittarius, the sum is greater than the parts.  If a Virgo had painted this picture, I don’t believe that it would have turned out the same.  A Virgo would have concentrated too much on the concept (such as the contrasting border of the canvas) rather than the final product itself.  As it stands, the image is iconic because it is visually compelling.  Only upon closer inspection does it reveal the tremendous breadth of Seurat’s accomplishment.

Sarah Silverman

The birthday girl for December 1 is Sarah Silverman.

I was just going through a mental list of the filthiest female comedians of all time.  While I didn’t come up with any astrological correspondences between the women who came to mind, I did realize that Sarah Silverman is a lot like many of the Sagittarius women I have been friends with in the past.

I did come up with once conclusion, though.  Typical Sagittarian humor arises from a certain lack of tact.  I think I even made a special plea to Sagittarius natives to be more tactful in my book, but if their inappropriateness/awkwardness in social situations makes me laugh, I really don’t care about their manners. Funny is funny, and good taste is the most-overrated force in the universe.

Ridley Scott

The birthday boy for November 30 is Ridley Scott.

Why is it that I keep running across the names of “big” film directors who happen to be Sagittarius natives? Sagittarius isn’t associated with subtlety and nuance, but aside from a couple of brazen Leo directors who come to mind (Cecil B. DeMille; James Cameron), I’m rediscovering this sign’s capacity for creating art on a large scale every time I look up another birthday.

Busby Berkeley

The birthday boy for November 29 is Busby Berkeley.

Sagittarius natives are rarely renowned for their subtlety, so it’s no surprise that film director Busby Berkeley was a Sagittarius.  Known for his elaborate choreography and signature visual style, he fits the bill as a typical Sagittarius.  Yet his preoccupation with geometry in his routines made me believe that I’d find some heavy Capricorn or Virgo influences in his birth chart.

I didn’t find what I was looking for.  Instead I found those two signs entirely void of planets.  Berkeley, however, had four planets in Scorpio.  Without an accurate birth time I can’t really explain how these planets contributed to his visual style except to say that Scorpio is often considered to be the sign of obsession. Berkeley’s style did border on the obsessive.  Perhaps it’s that quality that I should be investigating.

Hmmm . . .

Sharon Needles

Today’s birthday girl is Sharon Needles.

I was rooting for Sharon on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”  I was sort of surprised to discover that her sun sign is Sagittarius.  I was sort of expecting either a heavy dose of Scorpio or Capricorn.  So I looked up her natal chart . . .

What I got was a whole bunch of nothing because Needles was born on a day where a few planets switched signs.  Without an accurate birth time, I can’t say anything without sticking my foot in my mouth.  It’s too bad.  I really wanted to get a look into the astrological makeup of this intriguing performer.

Sharon Needles, call me!

Bill Nye

The birthday boy for November 27 is Bill Nye.

Sagittarius is traditionally associated with higher education.  What’s interesting is that I can think of many Sagittarius performers whose careers lead them into the role of educators.  For that reason, I’m not that surprised that Bill Nye actually began his career as “Bill Nye: The Science Guy” on a sketch comedy show rather than in a classroom.

I use the word “wanderlust” to describe the modus operandi of most Sagittarius natives.  Nye wanted to be an astronaut, yet ended up doing comedy and somehow wandered into the role of one of North America’s most well-known educators.  I suppose that’s a typical Sagittarius career path!

Rita Ora

The birthday girl for November 26 is Rita Ora.

Ora isn’t that well-known in North America yet, but I suspect that she’ll hit it big over here sometime soon.  Like so many girls and young women who have ruled the pop charts (Britney; X-Tina; Miley Cyrus; Taylor Swift; Nicki Minaj), Ora is a Sagittarius.

In my previous post I mentioned that there are not only plenty of Sagittarius “pop tarts,” but also plenty of “dumb blondes.”  As both a fashion critic and an astrologer, I wish that Rita Ora would choose to belong to the former category instead of the latter.  Gawd, I hate her hair!  I saw a photo of her with brown hair and she looked gorgeous. I don’t know if there’s anyone else in the spotlight at the moment whom I’m more eager to see get a makeover.

Normally, I’m all for Sagittarius women exploring all of their beauty options; sticking with one look can be quite boring for someone who suffers from the fashion equivalent of wanderlust.  This is one look, however, that I just can’t encourage.  I actually didn’t mind Britney with a bald head.  I kind of adore Miley Cyrus with her blonde buzz cut.  I gushed over X-Tina when she was doing that retro 40s thing with her hair and I can sort of excuse her for the dip-dye phase she’s in today.  But this?  It’s the biggest fashion crime of 2012.  I couldn’t hate it more!

Christina Applegate

The birthday girl for November 25 is Christina Applegate.

I’ve profiled several Sagittarius “pop tarts” since I began writing this blog, and at least as many “dumb blondes.”  It’s funny that there are so many examples of women who fit beautifully into each category.  It kind of makes you wonder why, right?

Sagittarians just see opportunity and act upon it.  They’ll take a risk that others might not take, like being typecast forever after accepting a role like Kelly Bundy on “Married with Children.”  Applegate has worked consistently since the show that made her a star ended in 1997, but she’s never really recreated the magic of “Married with Children.”

I suppose that most Sagittarius natives grow into a desire to be taken seriously.  They can often derail their careers trying to escape from under the shadow of the huge accomplishments of their youth.  It can be both a blessing and a curse, depending upon how seriously they take themselves.  I suppose that Applegate is still working because she hasn’t turned her back on comedy.  Hopefully, she never will.
