René Magritte

Today’s birthday boy is Belgian surrealist René Magritte.  Something that’s always interested me about Magritte is that the other modern artist who is most often associated with surrealism, Salvador Dali, is a Taurus.  Taurus and Scorpio are polar opposites in astrology, and Dali and Magritte are sort of polar opposites as artists even though they’re always lumped together into the same category.

Dali was a self-indulgent showman and the public adored him for being just that.  Magritte, on the other hand, was a little more introspective and self-contained.  According to his biography on Wikipedia, he even described his own paintings as “visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, ‘What does that mean?’.  It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.”

A Scorpio, of course, wouldn’t give up his secrets anyway.  They would rather give you a cryptic answer that makes you understand them less than reveal their inner workings.  Dali was essentially painting his insides on each canvas he produced.  Magritte could have been, but it’s more likely that he was just painting things he liked to see, and things that would make you scratch your head and wonder about the man who created the images.
