Portia de Rossi is one of those celebrities who really made me want to revise my theories about the sign of Aquarius. If there’s one thing I get from today’s birthday girl, it’s this: She learns from her mistakes. That’s Saturn’s influence. What may have struck me as a Uranus-influenced Bohemian streak (when I still was convinced that Uranus ruled Aquarius) now strikes me as the folly of youth combined with an undeveloped fashion sense.
Looking back at the archive of red carpet photos from de Rossi’s career, there are some doozies. Nevertheless, age and experience look wonderful on her, and she’s barely made a single faux pas in the past decade or so. She has been a little more conservative with her choices — allowing old Hollywood glamour to influence her red carpet style — and I expect that trend to continue because that’s what happens with Aquarius natives. Like the water bearer that symbolizes their sign, they carry around the weight of their experiences so that they don’t make the same mistakes over and over again.
Today’s birthday girl is Jody Watley. I was really, really, really into Jody Watley in 1987. Since then, I haven’t really paid attention to what she’s been doing.
Imagine my delight when I went to her Wikipedia page to catch up with her. I always thought that she was one of the most beautiful women in show business, and she still is absolutely gorgeous. The most interesting thing, however, is that she’s endured so beautifully. As I discuss how I believe that Aquarius is still (and always was) ruled by Saturn, I’d be doing the sign a disservice if I didn’t mention that it endows those individuals that it influences with persistence.
Anyway, that’s a fifty-year-old lady in the photo. I hope that I persist half as well as she’s persisted.
January 29th’s birthday girl is Oprah Winfrey. When I first started to question modern astrology’s interpretation of Aquarius, Oprah Winfrey was one of the people I had on my mind. She just didn’t seem like a textbook Aquarius native ruled by Uranus. Sure, she possessed many of the humanitarian qualities astrologers wanted to associate with the sign, but those qualities seemed to exist because she was a genuinely compassionate woman, not a prophet of a coming New Age.
So when I gave up on this modern interpretation and went back to basics, Oprah began to make sense to me. Her look also began to make sense to me. Even when I believed that Aquarius was ruled by Uranus, I always thought that “red carpet glamour” was the signature style of the sign. The best-dressed Aquarians had a style that was populist: They dressed for their audience and the world at large. Instead of taking the attitude of an Uranus-influenced eccentric, they adopted a more pragmatic Saturnian approach.
Aquarius natives dress for the crowd in what the public in general accepts as beautiful and fashionable. While I associate a label like Dior with Leo because John Galliano challenges women to take chances with their wardrobes, I associate Versace with Aquarius. At its best, Versace isn’t particularly challenging to people who live and breathe fashion. Neither is Oprah, for that matter. Yet millions of people would tell you that she’s one of the best-dressed women in the world. That’s Saturn at work. It really has nothing to do with Uranus, and despite what I may have thought when I first began studying the influence of astrology on fashion, it never really did.
If there’s one thing you can say about today’s birthday boy, Elijah Wood, it’s that he likes his murse. Almost every time I see a paparazzi shot of the actor, he’s got his man-purse strung over his shoulder.
I don’t believe that a murse is a particularly Aquarian garment, but Aquarius men are usually eager to appear open-minded in their youth. That quality normally begins to wane throughout adulthood, really turning a corner in their early forties. When that happens, the actor will probably begin carrying a gun. I’m kidding, sort of . . .
For most men, the murse is still a little out-there. Kudos to Elijah wood for making it his signature garment.
Today’s birthday boy is fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez. Rodriguez has an Aquarius sun and a Gemini moon. I’ve always pegged him as an “Aries” designer, creating clothing in the aesthetic of that particular sign.
Between the three signs I just mentioned, there is a common thread. I wouldn’t hesitate to call them the most contemporary signs in the zodiac. Without an accurate birth time, however, I can’t tell if there is an Aries influence in Rodriguez’s chart through house placements or angles, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was. His minimalistic message is so clear and concise on the runway that I can’t imagine that the sign of Aries has no influence upon his creative output.
Today’s birthday girl, Ellen Degeneres, exhibits a perfect balance between her sun sign and moon sign in the way she dresses. I can’t say enough about how women with an Aries sun need to tone down the girliness. Ellen has an Aries moon. Paired with her Aquarius sun, her look should be exactly what it is. She’s not particularly girly (Aries), yet she appears accessible to her audience (Aquarius) with her non-threatening wardrobe.
No matter what, Aquarius natives seek acceptance on their own terms. Often those terms are decided by social conventions. I read too much about the “quirky” and “eccentric” qualities of this sign. However, I rarely see those qualities in any Aquarius individuals over forty-years-old. The desire to be rebellious and different tends to wane with age for most Aquarians. As adults, they would rather be off the radar of the fashion police than under the gun of the hoodlums who write worst-dressed lists.
Today’s birthday girl, Alicia Keys, has an interesting natal chart. With the sun, Mercury and Mars in Aquarius, she should be a textbook example of the qualities of her sun sign. Yet, as my previous posts about this sign have intimated, she really didn’t go through the typical Aquarius rebellious stage in her youth. In fact, she’s been one the most dignified stars that show business has ever seen.
The reason, of course, is that she was born when Jupiter was conjunct Saturn in Libra. While that generational aspect would have affected anyone born within a few weeks of Keys in 1981, she had the good fortune of being born while the moon was in the same sign.
A Libra moon imparts poise. While Keys is likely to go through her life in a typically Aquarian sequence — going from liberal and rebellious in her youth to conservative and compliant in her old age — those are things that she’s going to keep to herself. The drapes are drawn on this one, and they probably always will be.
