Over the past few days the media has gone crazy over a story about a thirteenth astrological sign named Ophiuchus.  Let me assure you that there’s no such thing.

Western astrology is based upon a 360° circle called the zodiac and the mathematical relationships between the planets as they travel through the zodiac.  The zodiac itself is based upon solstice points that are determined by the earth’s tilt on its axis as it travels around the sun.  The constellations in the sky have little to do with astrology.  While a passive observer can say “the signs have changed in the past two-thousand years,” a well-trained astrologer can tell you how astrology accounts for this phenomenon called “precession of the equinoxes.”

It’s technical jargon, and if you don’t understand the mathematics of astrology then it’s really not something I would bother to investigate.  Nevertheless, you can read more about it here.  If you would like to understand a little more, you can order this book that explains how astrology has dealt with precession for thousands of years.  However, if you would like to continue to criticize astrology because you don’t understand the relationship of the constellations to astrology, please shut up.

Long before the actual invention of any tools that would facilitate either math or astronomy, there were people who actually developed the means to chart the sky.  They named the constellations after the areas of the sky that they inhabited.  They did not name the zodiac signs after the stars that appeared within those 30° arcs.  If you believe that, you’re an idiot.  If you honestly believe that the people who developed this complex system were also so stupid that they looked up into the sky and said “duh, those stars look like a crab,” then you don’t deserve an explanation.  You’re not smarter than me because I believe in astrology and you don’t believe in astrology.  In fact, you’re an idiot who likes to offer your expert opinion on things you don’t understand.  Again, shut the hell up.
