Archive for July 2011
When I wrote my book, I mentioned that Leo women can get away with incorporating wigs into their wardrobe. Fake hair wasn’t so popular a decade ago, so some people reacted with skepticism (well, more skepticism than usual) to my suggestion. Nevertheless, I wasn’t really suggesting that all Leo women should wear wigs. I knew that wigs and hairpieces were a wardrobe staple for many African-American women. I believe I even used Whitney Houston as an example.
Anyway, today’s birthday girl not only wears wigs, but she also has her own wig line. Vivica A. Fox is a Leo’s Leo. I don’t know if I’m the only one who has noticed this, but she seems to like herself an awful lot. I know, right?
The birthday boy for July 29 is Tim Gunn.
It didn’t take long for Tim Gunn to be elevated to a position of “fashion royalty” after he began appearing as the mentor to the designers on “Project Runway.” His regal bearing and decisive yet diplomatic manner of speech distinguished him as Leo from the moment he stepped into the work room.
His fellow Leo, Michael Kors, also stars on the show. Not exactly regal, but fashion royalty nonetheless, Kors makes up for his lack of Leonine majesty with his delightful pomposity and sun-worshipping ways. I’d love to see their charts side-to-side, but I don’t have accurate birth times to be able to compare them without just grasping at straws.
Today’s birthday girl is actress Elizabeth Berkley.
While looking at the bio of Berkley, I was reminded that the actress won the 1995 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “Showgirls.” Serendipitously, I also discovered that in thirty-one years of giving out the awards, the Razzie has been awarded to a Leo actress ten times. That statistic becomes even more alarming when it’s noted that in the two years that the Worst Actress Razzie was awarded to an ensemble cast (The Spice Girls for “Spice World“; the cast of “Sex and the City 2“) each group included a Leo (Geri Halliwell and Kim Cattrall, respectively).
To put these stats into perspective, I’ve compiled a list of Razzie winners according to their zodiac signs, not including the aforementioned years when an ensemble cast won the award and including two actresses that tied for the 2002 awards (thirty awards in total):
Aries: Mariah Carey.
Taurus: Pia Zadora (two awards).
Gemini: Brooke Shields.
Cancer: Lindsay Lohan.
Leo: Madonna (five awards); Melanie Griffith; Elizabeth Berkley; Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry; Sandra Bullock.
Libra: Heather Locklear.
Scorpio: Bo Derek (three awards); Sean Young; Demi Moore (two awards); Jenny McCarthy.
Sagittarius: Britney Spears.
Capricorn: Heather Donahue.
Aquarius: Linda Blair; Paris Hilton.
Pisces: Liza Minelli; Sharon Stone (two awards).
So what does all this mean? It undoubtedly means that Leos make the worst actresses, followed by Scorpios. Virgos no doubt make the best actresses. I’d better let Virgo superstar Beyoncé know about this so that she can do us all a favor and stop making awful records while she concentrates on her promising acting career instead. My sixth sense tells me that there are many, many awards in her future . . .
The birthday girl for July 27 is model Iekeliene Stange.
There are always a few girls working in fashion who seem to be staples of the couture shows just because they’re so good at making the clothes look fabulous. While they may not book the same number of high-profile campaigns as some of their fellow models, they’re able to linger in the business for years because they’re so good at what they do.
Iekeliene Stange is one of those girls. It doesn’t surprise me that she’s Leo, either. The girl knows how to work it!
The birthday boy for July 26 is professional poker player Daniel Negreanu.
I had never looked up Negreanu’s birthday, but I wasn’t surprised when I stumbled across it while looking for a Leo to profile. I don’t believe that there’s a single poker player who has pursued stardom away from the poker table in the way that Negreanu has. Now that’s a Leo for you!
I always thought it was weird that “Friends” became so successful with three Leo natives in the cast. Today’s birthday boy, Matt LeBlanc, shares his sun sign with Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry. The same thought struck me when “The X-Files” became a hit because both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are Leos. “Gigli” stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are also Leos. Okay, bad example . . .
Anyway, it’s odd how easily one Leo will share the spotlight with another Leo, yet they’ll claw the eyes out of anyone else who dares to get in their way. They tolerate each other in a way in which they would not tolerate anyone else. It’s just one of those things I’ve never read in an astrology book, and I’m surprised that no one else has pointed it out.
I’ve been known to call Leo the “ladies who lunch” sign. Women born under this zodiac sign can get away with donning dresses during the day that are normally reserved for cocktail parties, and I imagine them looking their best while they leisurely sip champagne during the noon hour. Anyone else would be accused of being a scene-stealer in the glitzy numbers that the typical Leo woman wears. But the typical Leo woman is far from typical.
Take today’s birthday girl, for example. Kristin Chenoweth has made a career for herself by being a scene-stealer. And no matter what she’s appearing in, 90% of the time she looks as if she’s headed to a cocktail party. Just think about it . . .
