The birthday boy for June 29 is composer Bernard Herrmann.
It’s interesting that a Cancer like Herrmann and a Leo like Alfred Hitchcock could have such a long-lasting, productive professional relationship. Of course, it makes sense when you consider that the Leo was responsible for the visual aspects of the film while the Cancer was responsible for setting the mood. In films like “Vertigo” and “Psycho,” the hauting scores of Herrmann are essential to the mood of the films as the cinematography and the script.
Herrmann and Hitchcock eventually parted ways over a dispute involving the score for “Torn Curtain.” It surprises me that it took so long for these two artists to butt heads. Just as their collaboration was written in the stars, so was their break-up.
