The birthday boy for December 10 is Kenneth Branagh.
Not long ago, I watched “Captain America: The First Avenger.” I thought it was terrific. Realizing that it was part of a series of movies based upon Marvel Comics, I decided to watch another in the series: Branagh’s “Thor.”
It wasn’t a bad movie, but it suffered from being too “large.” There was something about the scenes in Asgard and the way that the epic characters were brought down to earth that had me rolling my eyes throughout the film.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that “Thor” was directed by a Sagittarius native. If they have one fault in particular, it’s an inability to reign things in, and Branagh seems to be no exception. While “Captain America” evoked memories of the adventure movies I watched on TV as a kid, “Thor” reminded me of why most modern special-effects movies ultimately disappoint me. It was so much bigger than the story it told.
